Small Lava Drop Debit, BPPTKG: No Potential of Merapi Lahar Flood
Indo Kanal. Merapi Mountain again experienced a lava avalanche leading to the opening of the crater or upstream of Kali Gendol last night. However, this avalanche is relatively small and there is no potential for the occurrence of cold lava.
"There is no potential (cold lava of Mount Merapi)," said Head of the Geological Disaster Research and Development Center (BPPTKG), Hanik Humaida, when contacted by reporters on Monday (12/17/2018).
Hanik explained, the volume of the Merapi crater reached 10 million cubic meters. While currently the lava dome at Merapi has only reached 350 thousand cubic meters, with growth of only around 2-3 thousand cubic meters per day.
"So it's not unusual, and the growth of lava domes is still low, right, it's still around 2 thousand, 3 thousand per day. So there hasn't been a significant change in activity," he said.
Therefore, Hanik reiterated that there was no potential for the occurrence of lava walls at Merapi. He asked the public to remain calm, and not be provoked by false news.
"Once again, this volume is very small, bro. Please help, if you make a title later, don't be exaggerated. Poor people, they are worried about the titles (bombastic)," he said.
"I remind you that the growth of the Merapi lava dome (usually) is 20 thousand cubic meters per day, this is only 3 thousand, even 2016 is up to hundreds of thousands of cubic meters per day. So that means it's still very small," he concluded.
